A police officer in South Korea is being investigated for accidentally killing a woman she was dispatched to save.
The Incheon police officer, a woman in her 20s, ran over a citizen with her patrol car on Friday at around 12.45am local time, officials said.
The officer was dispatched after receiving a report that a woman in her 60s had collapsed and was lying on the road in Sungui-dong.
The officer ran over the woman with her car, causing her death, officials at the Incheon Michuhol Police Station said.
The officer reportedly explained that she "did not properly see the woman" as the streets were dark. The accident occurred near a left-hand bend in the road, according to officials.
The officer is being probed on charges of causing death under the Special Act on the Handling of Traffic Accidents.
The officials said they will review the surveillance footage and continue the investigation before deciding whether to seek an arrest warrant.
A police sergeant who was in the passenger seat at the time is unlikely to face punishment. "We do not consider the passenger, Sergeant C, to be subject to punishment as there was no duty of care," the officials said.
