Southampton boss Ruben Selles felt for fans after their relegation was confirmed.
Defeat to Fulham saw Saints mathematically relegated to the Championship.
It has been a very tough day for all of us," said Selles. For the technical staff, for the players, but especially for our fans, who have been supporting Southampton their entire life.
It's difficult. It's not a one-day situation, we built it up and we have not been good enough. We just need to analyse that and try to be better on the next occasions, and say thank you for the support from the fans.
There are a lot of people who have been supportive in the last months to us, there are people who have shown their passion for Southampton Football Club.
I understand that it is a tough night, but I also know that the club and the fans have been there before, and the club will bounce back.
When you are in a situation like the situation we are, we need to analyse and we need to be very clear and very honest on what has been good and what can be better, because of course we made mistakes in some different areas and that cannot happen again.
We will need to elevate our standards and when the club opens the new season, the standards should be on point and everybody should be on board to try to get the team back into the Premier League as quick as possible."
