STUDENTS, researchers, startups and engineers across Southeast Asia are invited to develop artificial intelligence solutions for agriculture through the Agritechnica Hackathon, an innovation initiative linked to Agrinnovate Southeast Asia Summit @ Agritechnica Asia 2026 in Bangkok, Thailand last May 22.
The hackathon, organized by the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (Searca) in partnership with the German Agricultural Society (DLG) and the DLG Prototype Club, focused on creating practical AI-powered applications for farming and agricultural operations.
Participants were tasked to address four agricultural technology challenges: real-time machine tracking, driver performance monitoring, field operation optimization under changing weather conditions, and the development of machine interfaces that provide actionable insights for farmers.
Searca said the program aimed to encourage young innovators, researchers and technology developers to create accessible and practical solutions for the agriculture sector. The competition was open to students, faculty members, startup founders, developers, designers and agricultural innovators from across Southeast Asia.
Winning teams received the Searca Agrinnovate Farmer-First Award, which recognizes AI-driven solutions that improve farming operations and support sustainable agriculture.
Entries were evaluated based on four sustainability dimensions: “Pocket” for farmer income and productivity; “Plate” for food security and nutrition; “Place” for environmental sustainability and climate resilience; and “People” for inclusion and community well-being.
Award recipients also gained access to Searca's innovation ecosystem, including mentoring programs, incubation and acceleration support, and collaboration opportunities with universities, innovation hubs and technology business incubators across Southeast Asia.
“Farmers must remain at the center of agricultural innovation,” said Emil John Cabrera, head of Searca’s Emerging Innovation for Growth Department. “We want innovators to develop solutions that are practical, inclusive and responsive to farming communities.”
Cabrera added that the initiative reflects Searca's goal of supporting technologies that improve livelihoods, strengthen food systems and promote sustainable agricultural transformation in the region.
