On his radar were Roma's England pair Chris Smalling and Tammy Abraham, with the latter suffering a shoulder injury during the defeat.
Afterwards, Southgate told Udinese TV: "I was very impressed by Udinese, who pressed hard and left no way out for Roma: they are really a strong team.
"The stadium is fantastic and the hospitality is beautiful."
