Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said has praised the Madrid Criminal Court's decision to sentence Spanish arbitrator Gonzalo Stampa to six months in prison for contempt of court. The court also banned Stampa from practicing as an arbitrator for a year.

Azalina expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, stating, "Congratulations to all Malaysians! Rogue arbitrator Gonzalo Stampa has been found guilty of contempt of court and has been sentenced by the Spanish courts to six months in prison together with a ban from practising as an arbitrator for a year. The efforts by this Kerajaan Madani in addressing and putting a stop to the Sulu Fraud has not been in vain. We persist in the fight for justice and will continue our efforts to annul the Final Award," Azalina wrote in a post on X today.

Azalina had previously traveled to Spain to observe Stampa's trial. She had expressed hope that if Stampa were convicted, it would bring an end to the Sulu claimants' demand for compensation over land in Sabah.

The case against Stampa involved accusations of serious contempt of court and unqualified professional practice by the Spanish Public Prosecutor's Office and Malaysia as the complainant. In 2021, the Madrid High Court of Justice had annulled Stampa's 2019 appointment as the arbitrator in the Sulu claimants' case against Malaysia. The court criticized Stampa for his "unethical and unprofessional" conduct in moving the arbitration proceedings to France and ordering Malaysia to pay US$14.9 billion to the Sulu claimants, contrary to the Spanish court's order.

The Madrid High Court of Justice's decision to annul Stampa's initial appointment came after he ignored the Spanish court's instructions and moved the arbitration proceedings to France. This move was deemed unethical and unprofessional, leading to the court's criticism and subsequent actions against Stampa.

The Sulu claimants' case against Malaysia has been a contentious issue, with the claimants seeking compensation for land in Sabah. The legal battle has been ongoing, with Malaysia vehemently defending its position.

Azalina's involvement in observing the trial in Spain underscores Malaysia's commitment to addressing the Sulu Fraud case. Her statement following Stampa's sentencing reflects a sense of vindication for Malaysia's efforts in pursuing justice in this matter.

Stampa's conviction and sentencing mark a significant development in the Sulu Fraud case. It sends a strong message about the consequences of disregarding court orders and engaging in unethical conduct. The ban on Stampa from practicing as an arbitrator for a year further emphasizes the severity of his actions and serves as a warning to others in similar positions.

As Malaysia continues its fight for justice and seeks to annul the Final Award, the outcome of Stampa's case could have broader implications for future arbitration proceedings. It underscores the importance of upholding ethical standards and respecting court decisions in such matters.

The sentencing of Stampa represents a step forward in the resolution of the Sulu Fraud case. It provides a sense of closure for Malaysia and reinforces the country's commitment to upholding the rule of law.
