DEWAN Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul is expected to issue a statement on Monday regarding any potential motion of no confidence against the Prime Minister, should such a move be tabled by any Member of Parliament.
“Wait for tomorrow, thank you,” he said briefly when contacted by Berita Harian, declining to confirm whether his office had received any formal submission ahead of the upcoming Dewan Rakyat session, which begins Monday and runs until late August.
According to the Aturan Urusan Mesyuarat (Order Paper) published on Parliament’s official website, no such motion appears to have been submitted as of Sunday — including by MPs from the opposition bloc.
The latest parliamentary session, scheduled from 22 July to 28 August, is expected to run into the evenings, with significant focus on the tabling and debate of the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13).
The question of a possible no-confidence motion has resurfaced following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's challenge on Saturday for the opposition to formally submit such a motion in Parliament. Anwar, who also serves as Finance Minister, issued the challenge in response to opposition efforts to organise a rally scheduled for this coming Saturday, demanding his resignation.
A previous vote of confidence in Anwar was tabled and passed by voice vote on 19 December 2022, shortly after he was appointed Prime Minister in the wake of the 15th General Election. The motion was introduced by Deputy Prime Minister II Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and seconded by Deputy Prime Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, with a total of 12 MPs from both sides debating the motion.
Meanwhile, Kuala Lumpur Acting Police Chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad has confirmed that authorities expect between 10,000 and 15,000 people to participate in the "Himpunan Turun Anwar" (Step Down, Anwar Rally) scheduled for 26 July.
He added that the organisers have informed the Dang Wangi District Police Headquarters, and approximately 2,000 police officers will be deployed to ensure the gathering proceeds safely and to maintain public order. - July 20, 2025
