Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker-cum-Kotkapura MLA Kultar Singh Sandhwan’s mother-in-law Harbans Kaur, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate, won by a margin of 264 votes from Ward 5 in the Municipal Corporation (MC) elections in Bathinda.

A resident of Hazura Kapura Colony on Barnala road, 70-year-old Harbans Kaur is a homemaker. Her husband, Bhola Singh Maluka, is a former president of the Thermal Plant Technical Employees’ Union and claims to have remained at its helm for nearly 25 years. Their son is posted as a Sub-Inspector in police here.

Harbans Kaur’s elder daughter Gurpreet Kaur is married to Kultar Sandhwan. Sandhwan, however, had not come to campaign for his mother-in-law.

The family was earlier associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and supported former cabinet minister Sikander Singh Maluka. However, when Sandhwan joined the AAP, it too switched sides.

Harbans Kaur had main contest with AAP rebel Rajinder Singh’s wife Baljit Kaur. She was an Independent candidate.
