Special application lane through UPUOnline to continue: Khaled

KUALA LUMPUR – The government has agreed to continue the special application lane for the admission of students to public universities and public vocational training institutions through UPUOnline.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the decision was made following the National Social Council Bill 1/2023 meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in Parliament yesterday.

“The special lane for student admission includes four target groups, namely the low-income (B40), persons with disabilities, Orang Asli and athletes,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Khaled said in line with plans to expand access to higher education, the ministry is willing to consider access to the special lane for students from institutions under the Social Welfare Department, namely Sekolah Tunas Bakti, Asrama Akhlak and Taman Seri Puteri.

He said the lane is a special admission method and candidates do not have to compete with mainstream groups to continue their studies.

Khaled, however, said that candidates must still meet the general and specific requirements of their chosen degree programmes and will be vetted within their group of applicants. – Bernama, March 17, 2023
