Kota Kinabalu: A special exhibition “Dirgahayu Tuan Yang Terutama” and “Tamu” was officially opened at the Sabah Islamic Heritage Museum.

Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Christina Liew, said the special exhibition held in conjunction with the Head of State Tun Haji Juhar Datuk Haji Mahiruddin’s 70th birthday celebration, will be ongoing until May 1 next year.

“The annual exhibition, ‘Dirgahayu Tuan Yang Terutama’ revolves around the Head of State’s various community programmes and activities, as an umbrella for the unity and well-being of the people.

“The strength and peace-loving spirit highlighted by the Head of State binds and guides the people of Sabah to maintain the stability and unity of the state.

Christina added that this year the special exhibition is also brightened with “Tamu” or native market exhibition.

“Sabah is indeed synonymous with “Tamu” as a meeting and business centre that brings together various ethnic groups for the activities of buying and selling village produce, socialising, and sharing news.

“In addition to being a place to do business and buy necessities, ‘Tamu’ also is an attraction for tourists who visit Sabah,” she said.

For the record, “Tamu” had existed long before the days of the British North Borneo Chartered Company (BNBCC) founded in 1881.

During that time, the mainstay of the native economy was subsistence farming.

The BNBCC brought in Chinese settlers, expanded trade, and stimulated a groundswell of native agricultural activities especially tobacco in its early days.

The earliest ‘Tamu’ in Sabah was launched in Kota Belud on Dec 13, 1878.

The exhibition is open daily from 9am to 5pm. Tickets are priced at RM2 for locals and RM15 for foreign tourists.
