Kota Kinabalu: The State Ministry of Finance (MOF) will be implementing a Special Programme for Voluntary Declaration of State Sales Tax (SST) starting Aug 15 to Dec 31.

This programme is to encourage State Sales Tax payers for two products - fishery commodities and scrap iron - brought out of Sabah.

Taxpayers are urged to voluntarily register for a licence and declare taxes in due accordance with the State Sales Tax Enactment 1998.

The programme is also implemented to ensure that state revenue that should have been paid to the State Government is collected in 2023.

The taxable period involved for this Special Programme is according to the effective date of the STT which are May 1, 2021 to Aug 14, 2023 (fish products) and Feb 1, 2022 to Aug 14, 2023 (scrap iron).

The SST Voluntary Recognition Special Programme targets companies that have never been registered with a SST licence, those who have registered but have not made an SST declaration for certain sales transactions or those with incorrect SST declarations for any assessment year.

Companies are allowed to make payments either in a lump-sum within 30 days from the date of Form 4 or through instalments subject to the approval of the MOF.

However, instalment payments are not applicable for current taxes for the Aug 15 to Dec 31, 2023 period. Companies have to pay before the taxed goods are taken out of Sabah.

Guidelines for the Special Programme can be found on the official portal of the State Ministry of Finance.
