Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Health Department urged the public to spend at least 10 minutes per week cleaning up their house compounds so as to prevent mosquito breeding grounds.

This is due to the increasing number of dengue cases with the latest figure being 3,833 cases and three deaths as of Sept 17.

The department said that apart from throwing away stagnant water that might have collected in pots or buckets, the public should also make sure that their trash is cleared properly.

People with dengue are at risk of death if they have severe symptoms and complications.

According to the department report, Kota Kinabalu has the highest number at 997 dengue cases, followed by Sandakan with 947 cases, Tawau with 335 cases, Lahad Datu with 277 cases and Putatan with 269 cases.

The other districts with three figure cases are Semporna (233), Penampang (160) and Papar at 147 cases.

Districts that record between 20 to 60 cases are Tuaran (56), Sipitang (54), Kota Belud (45), Kuala Penyu (40), Beaufort (37), Kudat (37), Tenom (29), Kinabatangan (27) and Keningau 23.

Ranau, Kota Marudu, Beluran, Kunak, Nabawan, Pitas and Tongod record between 13 and 19 cases.

There were three reported Dengue cases in Tambunan district as well.

Twelve places have been identified as the latest hotspot areas. They are Taman Mesra, Taman Mawar Fase 1, Taman Damai, Kampung Bahagia, Taman Mawar Fasa 4, Taman Indah/Indah Jaya Fasa 1, Kampung Tinusa II Laut, and Tinusa Dua (Darat), all in Sandakan district.

The hotspots in Kota Kinabalu are at the Kepayan police headquarters quarters and Kg Warisan Phase 1, Kg Sarip in Lahad Datu and Kg Meruntum Fasa 1 in Putatan.

Six areas have also been marked with uncontrolled Dengue outbreak including Kg Batu Putih, Taman Megah. Taman Sri Rimba Gaya and Kampung Tinusa 1 in Sandakan, Kg Likas Lorong Koruk in Kota Kinabalu and Taman Bayview Teluk Vila in Putatan.
