Kota Kinabalu: A viral clip of a motorcyclist tumbled by strong waves at the road near Likas Bay Thursday was a Sabah Publishing House (SPH) employee.

Hanizan Abu Kasturi, 42, was on his way back to SPH headquarters in Kolombong from the Daily Express office in Kampung Air via his usual route at the time.

“I was trying to help another motorcyclist ahead who had fallen. His things were drifting away in the water,” he said, recalling the 4.30pm incident.

The individual continued in his way but not for Hanizan.

He explained the recorded fall wasn’t his first – he was knocked over three times before wheeling away his Yamaha LC.

“I saw a few other motorcyclists pass through with no problems which encouraged me to follow. A Daily Express staff member travelling to his office on a motorcycle was knocked down by seawaves that inundated the Likas bay road in Kota Kinabalu. A clip went viral on social media.

“But then again I shouldn’t have. That’s salt water. You know how damaging it is to metal. What you saw in the video was me trying to restart the engine for the second time,” he said.

Not wanting to damage his machine any further, Hanizan decided to push it back to Kampung Air.

“It’s still parked there. I need to get it fixed. Saltwater is already in the engine. Now I’m using my brother’s motorcycle to work.

“My advice to motorcyclists when caught in such a situation is to turn back and don’t take the risk. Other than the saltwater anything could happen,” he said.

The 44-second video of him believed to taken from inside Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) was widely shared on social media.
