Spider-Man: Brand New Day becomes second-fastest film to make $2 billion at box office

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken the $2 billion dollar mark at the global box office, becoming just the eighth film to reach that milestone.

The Marvel blockbuster, which stars Tom Holland as the web-slinging superhero, achieved the feat after being released three weekends ago. In terms of time taken to reach $2 billion, that places the film behind only 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which took just 11 days to pull off a similar box office haul.

As Variety reported, Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s receipts are split between the $785 million the film grossed in North America and a further $1.23 billion overseas. It’s official total now stands at $2.022 billion.

The seven other films that have made over $2 billion at the box office are: 2009’s Avatar ($2.9 billion), 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($2.7 billion), 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water ($2.3 billion), 1994’s Titanic ($2.2 billion), 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.07 billion) and 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War ($2.03 billion).

The previous installment in the Spider-Man franchise, 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, narrowly missed out on the landmark by finishing with a total box office of $1.9 billion.

As well as being a hit at the box office, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also won over critics.

In a four-star review for The Independent, Clarisse Loughrey called the film “the best Spider-Man movie in more than 20 years.”

She added: “Brand New Day offers a maturation not only of its hero, but of the franchise’s entire vision, too. While returning screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers provide a sense of continuity in the character, its director Destin Daniel Cretton (of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings fame) and his frequent cinematographer Brett Pawlak have simultaneously allowed the series to feel completely revitalised.”

The film has also been noted for including an unusual post-credits scene.

Like many other films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the new Tom Holland flick features an extra scene once the credits have rolled but in a rare move, it doesn’t feature anyone at all.

*Warning – spoilers ahead for Spider-Man: Brand New Day*

The post-credits scene shows the screen for a device used for tracking Spider-Man as it receives a new notification as to the superhero’s whereabouts. After scanning for the masked vigilante, it drops a pin on his location in outer space – teasing that we’ll next see Parker head away from Earth.
