Spider-Man: Brand New Day secures second-biggest box office opening weekend of all time

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has enjoyed the second-biggest opening weekend of all time at the global box office, raking in US$927 million (£688.5 million).

The blockbuster sees Tom Holland return for his fourth outing as the iconic superhero, opposite his real-life wife Zendaya as his love interest, MJ Watson.

The film plunges Holland’s Peter Parker into a world where his identity as Spider-Man has been erased from public memory. As he continues his fight against crime, a dangerous new adversary emerges.

The film earned $355 million (£263 million) in the US and Canada during its opening weekend, complemented by an additional $572 million (£425 million) from international markets.

China led the international ticket sales, contributing $121 million (£90 million) to the total.

The debut places Spider-Man: Brand New Day second only to Avengers: Endgame, which grossed $1.22 billion (£905 million) upon its release in 2019.

Sony Pictures invested $225 million (£167 million) in the production of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, excluding marketing expenses.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said: "This is a truly phenomenal opening, and we are grateful to audiences everywhere for coming out and experiencing our film the way it was meant to be seen."

Feige, who produced the film, added: "This debut reflects the enduring power of Marvel’s characters, and the connection they continue to have with fans around the world and, as audiences saw, it sets up exciting things to come."

Marvel Studios now commands the top four largest global opening weekends, not adjusted for inflation:

  1. Avengers: Endgame ($1.22 billion/£905 million)
  2. Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($927 million/£688.5 million)
  3. Avengers: Infinity War ($640 million/£475 million)
  4. Spider-Man: No Way Home ($600 million/£446 million).

The top five is rounded out by Disney’s Zootopia 2, which made $560 million (£416 million) during its opening weekend in 2025.

The film’s triumph follows the recent success of Sir Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which has garnered $911 million dollars (£676 million) globally to date.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has also received critical acclaim, boasting a 90 per cent score on the film review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Alongside Holland and Zendaya, the cast features Jon Bernthal as the vigilante Frank Castle, and Sadie Sink as Jean Grey from the X-Men.
