- Peter Wai, a 41-year-old former British immigration official, and Bill Yuen, a 66-year-old retired Hong Kong police officer, have been jailed for spying for China and conducting "shadow policing" operations against Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters in the UK.
- Wai received a 10-year prison sentence, while Yuen was jailed for eight years, following their conviction under the National Security Act for assisting a foreign intelligence service.
- The pair were arrested after a failed attempt to abduct Monica Kwong, a £16 million fraud suspect, from her flat in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, an operation that was being monitored by security services.
- Wai was also convicted of misconduct in public office for misusing the Home Office computer system to gather intelligence on individuals of interest to Hong Kong authorities, people who were targeted included British politicians like Sir Iain Duncan Smith.
- Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb described their actions as "deliberate, concerted, and serious," causing "real and significant" harm to those targeted, in one of the first cases prosecuted under the National Security Act, which came into force in 2023.
