Spot An Official Convoy On Malaysian Roads? Here’s What Not To Do

A 27-year-old SUV driver was recently arrested after allegedly continuing to follow a police convoy carrying the Deputy Prime Minister from Kajang towards Sunway Medical Centre in Subang Jaya, despite being told by a police escort not to do so, as reported by Kosmo!.

While you probably don’t encounter an official convoy every day, here’s what you shouldn’t do if you happen to come across one on Malaysian roads.

1. Don’t deliberately follow the convoy

If you’re travelling in the same direction as an official convoy, simply continue your journey normally. Don’t deliberately attach yourself to the back of it.

In this latest case, police said the driver continued following the convoy despite being warned, with his actions potentially endangering the convoy and other road users.

PDRM has previously stressed that convoy escort arrangements involving police are subject to official procedures, while unauthorised attempts to act as an escort or interfere with traffic can result in enforcement action.

2. Don’t ignore a police officer’s instructions

If a traffic officer tells you to slow down, stop, change lanes or not follow the convoy, listen.

PDRM also specifically reminds road users to comply with instructions from traffic police and remain alert to their surroundings.

3. Don’t tailgate or squeeze between convoy vehicles

Even if you haven’t intentionally joined the convoy, don’t drive dangerously close to the vehicles or try to squeeze into gaps between them.

JPJ advises motorists to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and avoid dangerous driving.

4. Don’t try to overtake, cut into or disrupt the convoy

Getting impatient because the convoy is occupying the lane? Resist the urge to suddenly cut across it.

Official convoys may involve coordinated traffic management, and PDRM has said its convoy procedures are designed to protect officers and ensure safety during movement.

5. Don’t get distracted trying to film or photograph it

Yes, your phone might be tempting when you suddenly spot a convoy.

But don’t sacrifice your attention to traffic just to get a video for TikTok.

PDRM advises drivers to maintain full concentration while driving and avoid distractions such as using a mobile phone. JPJ similarly warns that phone use can interfere with attention and increase the risk of crashes.

Long story short, if you encounter an official convoy: stay in your lane, keep a safe distance, follow police instructions and let them get on with their journey.
