Get ready to dive back into a crooked and treacherous world where failure means death, as the global sensation that is Squid Game is returning with season 2 on Netflix.
After the massive success of its inaugural season, Netflix officially confirmed in June 2022 that Squid Game would be returning for a chilling new season. And, we can’t wait to see what’s in store for our favourite characters (those who survived, that is) and other cash-strapped contestants being lured into playing a series of deadly games in the hopes of becoming billionaires.
Squid Game season 1 saw participants risk their lives for a chance at a life-altering cash reward, but only a few contestants managed to survive. Now the creators are carrying the story forward, focusing on Gi-hun and a select group of other survivors while bringing in new contestants to the mix. The debut season was such a hit that the original cast members witnessed a rise in their global profile. It even inspired a reality show on Netflix called Squid Game: The Challenge which became an instant hit, accumulating over 224 million hours watched within the first three weeks of its release.
From the hints dropped by the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, about season 2 being even darker to the tantalising teasers and trailers released so far, here’s everything we know about Squid Game season 2. This includes information about the newest cast members and potential plot details.
What could be the plot of Squid Game season 2?
The plot for season 2 will pick up three years after Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) emerged victorious in the initial contest. Now equipped with a “renewed determination”, he reenters the perilous games, aiming to save new contestants from the grim fate he narrowly avoided.
According to the show’s synopsis, “Gi-hun once again dives into the mysterious survival game, starting another life-or-death game with new participants gathered to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.”
This season will provide viewers with an in-depth exploration of Gi-hun’s evolution; he is no longer the innocent player from the first season but rather a resolute survivor driven by purpose.
The creators have also recently released a new trailer for season 2, which indicates that the games will be as malevolent as ever.
In the trailer, a hardened Gi-hun, also known as Player 456, reenters the lethal games with a singular objective: to put an end to the terrifying competition once and for all. Compelled to engage in a new series of games, he finds himself embroiled in a tense confrontation with the enigmatic Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), whose true intentions remain shrouded in mystery as the plot twists of season 2 unfold.
The trailer also confirms Hwang Jun-ho’s (Wi Ha-joon) return, despite his apparent death in the first season, as a relentless detective on a mission of his own.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang also shared that he is “nearly done with the editing portion of season three”. He further explained why he chose to wrap up the show with season 3. “When I was thinking about the idea for the ending of season three, I think it sort of naturally came to me that this was the finale,” Hwang revealed, adding, “I believed that with that story, I was able to tell everything that I wanted to tell through the story of Squid Game and also in the perspective of Gi-hun as a character, and I thought that we don’t need any further stories from here.”
