AFTER several shifts in stance since the 17th Sabah General Election (PRN17), Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) has formally confirmed its support for the state government led by Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), also referred to as the Unity Government.
STAR President, Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, explained that the decision reflects the wishes of the majority of party members and divisional chiefs, who prioritised political stability to ensure the smooth functioning of the state administration.
"GRS proposed the formation of a unity government to maintain political stability, which aligns with STAR’s own objectives. It is therefore appropriate for us to support this unity government. The election is over, and now it is time to serve the people," Jeffrey said in a statement on Friday.
He stressed that STAR’s decision does not imply any departure from the party’s core mission.
"The party remains committed to advocating for Sabah’s rights, whether we are in government or opposition," he added.
Jeffrey also clarified that STAR’s role in the opposition remains unchanged, despite one of its State Assembly members, Datuk Ishak Ayub, being appointed as an assistant minister.
"We are not joining GRS. We are assisting GRS in forming the Unity Government to ensure political stability after PRN17 because that is what the people want, based on the election results," he said.
The announcement comes amid a period of negotiation following a closely contested election in which GRS did not secure enough seats to form a government independently, making wider collaboration essential for the continuity of governance.
