Kota Kinabalu: The State Government’s decision to officially gazette Aug 31 as Sabah Day marks a significant victory for Sabah leaders and activists who have long called for this recognition.

The date commemorates the day in 1963 when Sabah was granted self-government, just weeks before the merger with Sarawak, Singapore and Peninsular Malaya to form Malaysia. Singapore left the Federation on mutually agreed terms two years later.

Datuk Jalumin Bayogoh who twice (2014 and 2018) chaired Sabah Day celebrations, said it was the best thing to happen in 2024.

He praised the tireless efforts of Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey G Kitingan and other Sabah leaders who have been advocating for this recognition for over a decade.
