Star Wars actor says watching prequel was ‘biggest disappointment of life’

  • Peter Serafinowicz, the British actor who voiced Darth Maul in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, described watching the 1999 film as “the biggest disappointment of my life at that point.”
  • Speaking on Seann Walsh’s Classic Clown podcast, Serafinowicz admitted he "wasn't that into" the character of Darth Maul and questioned director George Lucas's comparison of him to James Earl Jones given his pay.
  • Despite initial critical reception, The Independent's Louis Chilton recently argued that The Phantom Menace is "a fascinating blockbuster".
  • Serafinowicz later recorded lines for Darth Maul's cameo in Solo, but was replaced by Sam Witwer, though he returned to voice the character in the 2026 spin-off series Maul – Shadow Lord.
  • Witwer, who voiced Darth Maul in The Clone Wars, also criticised Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi, describing it as a movie “made by a guy who hadn’t quite done his homework”.
