- Roy Hattersley, the former Labour deputy leader, has died at the age of 93.
- Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer led tributes, describing Mr Hattersley as a “giant of the Labour movement” who dedicated decades to public service.
- Known as Labour's “nearly man”, Mr Hattersley served as an MP for 33 years and was deputy leader under Neil Kinnock.
- He was credited with helping to steer the Labour Party away from policies that made it unelectable in the 1980s.
- He later became a vocal critic of New Labour, accusing it of abandoning socialist principles, and was also a prolific author.
