
- Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said it is important to “rise above any political differences” and focus on catching Ann Widdecombe’s killer.
- Detectives have launched a murder investigation into Miss Widdecombe’s death after she was found with serious injuries at her home. Devon and Cornwall Police said they are hunting a “white male” suspect after the former Tory minister’s body was discovered on Thursday morning.
- Speaking to reporters at Chequers, Sir Keir said the news was “shocking” and described Miss Widdecombe as “a distinguished politician”.
- Asked whether Miss Widdecombe’s murder is believed to have been politically motivated, Sir Keir said the security of politicians “is of the utmost importance” but he would not speculate on any potential motive.
- He added: “He’s clearly dangerous, and I implore everybody who’s got any information in relation to him to help the police with their inquiries and get him into police custody.”
