State backs support for special needs children

KENINGAU: The State Government will continue supporting efforts to expand access to education, early intervention and support services for children with special educational needs, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said the collaboration involves the Sabah Education Department, schools, parents, government agencies, institutions of higher learning, the private sector and non-governmental organisations.

Hajiji said RM173.56 million has been allocated this year to the Ministry of Women, Health and People's Wellbeing and its departments and agencies to implement welfare and wellbeing programmes.

Speaking at the opening of The Neurohope Programme 2026 at SK Bingkor Hall on Saturday, in a speech delivered by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Ceasar Mandela Malakun, he said the State is also expanding the Sabah Autism Centre (Paus), with new centres in Tawau, Sandakan, Kudat and Beaufort to open in phases from this year.

He said The Neurohope Programme reflects a collective effort to strengthen inclusive education and support for children with special educational needs while congratulating Dr Velerie Primus for his international recognition in education.
