State Government acts swiftly: power supply restored

Kota Kinabalu: The 800-odd former workers of Sabah Forest Industries Sdn Bhd (SFI) no longer have to worry about spending their Christmas and New Year by candlelight and without water supply.

The State Government acted swiftly to alleviate the suffering of them and dependents involving 640 houses and 3,000 occupants, respectively, in Sipitang, following Wednesday’s front page report in the Daily Express.

It is understood that electricity supply was restored at 11.45am, Wednesday, on the instructions of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

“We would like to express our utmost gratitude to the State Government and Chief Minister for resolving our electricity bill issue,” Jeffrey Gopog, the spokesperson for the former workers, told Daily Express. Our report on Dec 14, 2022.

Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) cut the power supply on Tuesday at11am due to unpaid bills amounting to more than RM700,000 which had accumulated over the last two years.

Jeffrey said in line with the power reconnection, the former workers decided to cancel their planned peaceful demonstration which was supposed to take place on Wednesday.

SFI is under liquidation and it is understood that receiver-manager Grant Thornton was supposed to look into the matter.

It was also reported that one of the top executives of Grant Thornton was charged with Criminal Breach of Trust involving RM120 million.
