Kota Kinabalu: Every department under the state government is encouraged to organise at least two blood donation campaigns each year.
Deputy Chief Minister I, Datuk Seri Panglima Dr. Jeffrey G. Kitingan, stated that according to 2020 records, Sabah has 1,907 Thalassemia patients who require blood transfusions.
“The number is estimated to increase about 10 to 20 patients each year.
“Apart from Thalassemia patients, blood supplies are also needed for haematology patients, surgeries, and accident victims, making Sabah the state with the highest demand for blood supplies.

“It is our shared responsibility to ensure that patients receive optimal medical treatment by providing sufficient, safe, and timely blood,” he said while officiating the 11th National Medical Transfusion Conference here on Friday.
His speech was read by Assistant Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food Industry, Peto Galim.
He also mentioned that in terms of location and transportation, it would be highly appropriate for Sabah to have several fixed blood donation sites that are comfortable and convenient for donors, such as in shopping malls and convention centres.
The conference was attended by 400 registered delegates and discussed topics such as innovative transfusion practices, overcoming systemic challenges, and the latest developments in blood and plasma therapy.
