SHAH ALAM, July 5 Voters in six states will go to the polls on August 12, the Election Commission (EC) announced today (July 5).

Its chairman Tan Sri Datuk Abdul Ghani Salleh said nomination day for candidates in the 15th state assembly elections for Selangor, Penang, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu is July 29, while early voting is on August 8.

He told a press conference 9,773,571 million voters are eligible to cast their ballot in the state polls.

According to the data released by the commission, the state polls would involve 245 seats, consisting 56 in Selangor, 40 in Penang, 36 in Negeri Sembilan, 36 in Kedah, 45 in Kelantan, and 32 in Terengganu.

“The campaign period has been fixed for 14 days, beginning from after the announcement of the candidates on July 29, until 11.58 pm on August 11, 2023,” he said.

The EC will station 245 election officers for the election process and they would be aided by 740 assistant managers.

From July 17, voters can check the information on the polling centres and stations, as well as their serial numbers via https://mysprsemak.spr.gov.my or contact the EC Hotline at 03-8892 7018/ 7218/ 7124 or through the MySPR Semak application.

The state elections were called after the state legislative assemblies of the six states were recently dissolved.

Kelantan was the first state among the six to dissolve its state assembly on June 22, followed by Selangor on June 23, Penang, Kedah, and Terengganu (June 28), and Negeri Sembilan (July 1).

This is the first time several state polls are to be held concurrently outside of the general election.

Previously, the 15th general election was held on November 19 of last year.
