Statistics Indonesia Logs 1.09 Million Foreign Visits in March

JAKARTA - Statistics Indonesia recorded 1.09 million foreign tourist visits in March 2026, up 10.50 percent from the same month last year, according to its official statistics release published on May 4.

The March data covered a month that included Eid al-Fitr travel, with domestic movement rising much faster than foreign visits. The statistics agency also recorded 126.34 million domestic tourist trips, up 42.10 percent year on year, and 793,160 outbound trips by Indonesian residents, up 36.26 percent.

Statistics Indonesia deputy for distribution and services statistics Ateng Hartono said the first-quarter inbound total was the strongest since the pandemic period. “Foreign tourist visits from January to March 2026 were the highest achievement since 2020,” he said, as quoted by Indonesia’s state-owned agency Antara.

From January to March, Indonesia received 3.44 million foreign tourist visits, up 8.62 percent from the same period in 2025. Hartono said Malaysia remained the largest source market in March, with 186,530 visits, equal to 17.14 percent of total foreign visits.

The BPS data also showed higher accommodation use. The room occupancy rate at star-rated hotels reached 42.78 percent in March, up 9.22 percentage points from March 2025.

The March foreign-arrival breakdown was led by regional markets. Malaysia was the largest source of foreign tourist visits with 17.14 percent of the total, followed by Australia at 12.01 percent and Singapore at 9.45 percent.

Domestic travel was concentrated in Java. West Java was the top destination for domestic tourist trips in March with 17.80 percent, followed by East Java at 16.45 percent and Central Java at 15.84 percent.
