In a scathing Facebook post, former Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has launched a pointed critique against Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, accusing him of hypocrisy and political manipulation. The post, dated September 10, 2024, reflects Mahathir’s frustration with the current state of Malaysian politics, particularly in relation to Zahid’s legal troubles and his role in the government.

Mahathir’s comments were triggered by Zahid’s recent public statement suggesting that leaders of the PAS under investigation should voluntarily take leave from their positions. According to Zahid, this step would be a gesture of accountability and integrity amid ongoing probes.

However, Mahathir argues that Zahid’s own situation exemplifies a double standard in Malaysian politics. Despite being charged with serious offenses and facing a court trial, Zahid did not step down from his position. Instead, Mahathir points out, Zahid’s trial was halted, and he subsequently assumed the role of Deputy Prime Minister.

In his post, Mahathir lambasted the apparent discrepancy between Zahid’s call for PAS leaders to go on leave and Zahid’s own conduct. “Today’s Malaysia,” Mahathir wrote, “if you are charged in court, get yourself appointed as Deputy Prime Minister and the charges will be dropped.” He further criticized the system by stating that Zahid’s political ascent and the suspension of his trial demonstrate a troubling trend where high-profile individuals can evade accountability. Mahathir’s remark underscores a broader discontent with perceived corruption and impunity among Malaysia’s political elite.

Mahathir’s post reflects a growing sentiment among certain segments of the public and political observers who believe that political connections and positions of power are being used to circumvent justice. His criticisms echo long-standing concerns about the integrity of Malaysia’s legal and political systems, particularly when it comes to handling cases involving high-ranking officials.

The former Prime Minister’s comments also highlight a broader issue of trust in the government and its commitment to ethical governance. By contrasting Zahid’s situation with his own call for PAS leaders to take a leave of absence, Mahathir is questioning the consistency and fairness of the standards applied to different political figures.
