A STEPFATHER was arrested after he was suspected of secretly recording videos of his own family members in the bathroom of a house in Kampung Tanjung Batu Laut, Tawau, yesterday.
Tawau District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin, said the 39-year-old suspect was arrested at 8.07 pm, less than two hours after police received a report at 6.27 pm the same day.
According to him, the disgusting act was uncovered when a 12-year-old girl found a mobile phone believed to belong to her stepfather hidden in the toilet of the house while it was recording, before handing it over to her mother.
The results of the inspection found that there were several humiliating video recordings involving the victim and her children, believed to have been recorded without their knowledge while they were using the bathroom.
"The suspect, who works as a labourer and lives in the same house as the victim, finally admitted to the act after being questioned by his family members," he said in a statement today.
An initial inspection of the seized mobile phone found 10 video clips involving the victim and two children.
He said the suspect was detained for further investigation under Section 377D and Section 509 of the Penal Code for committing an indecent act and insulting the victim's honour. – January 13, 2026
