Cinderella’s story is getting a very different twist in the upcoming animated Netflix movie Steps, which turns the familiar fairy tale upside down and asks what we really know about the princess and her so-called evil stepsisters. Set in the magical kingdom of Alouette, the film takes the story beyond the royal ball and glass slipper, sending its characters on an unexpected quest filled with magic, trolls and a battle for the kingdom. Directed by Alyce Tzue and John Ripa, the animated adventure explores the relationship between two sisters who may have more in common than they realise, while also putting a fresh spin on the idea of who gets their happily ever after.
What is the plot of the Netflix movie animated Steps?
Steps reimagines the story of Cinderella from the perspective of her so-called “evil” stepsister, Lilith. Tired of always being overshadowed by Cinderella, Lilith decides to take matters into her own hands by stealing the Fairy Godmother’s magical wand.
Things quickly spiral out of control when Lilith and her sister Margot hijack the Royal Ball. Their actions end up disrupting the Cinderella story as audiences know it and leave the kingdom vulnerable to a new threat.
The chaos allows Priscilla, a villainous schemer, to seize the throne and impose her tyrannical rule over the kingdom. Lilith is then forced to put aside her rivalry with Cinderella and join forces with her stepsister.
Together, they embark on an adventure to save the kingdom, facing biker trolls, dangerous henchmen and the mysterious Screaming Woods along the way. At the heart of their quest is not only the fate of the kingdom but also the complicated relationship between the two sisters.
The first teaser gives a glimpse of the 2026 animated movie’s irreverent take on the classic fairy tale and is set to Charli xcx’s “Mean Girls.”
