A heartwarming story recently came to light after the Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), Steven Sim Chee Keong, shared a promise he once made to a frail elderly woman.

In a post on his Facebook page that has since drawn plenty of praise from netizens, Sim revealed that 89-year-old Ah Ma Cha Moi had been living in a wooden house, a home almost as old as she is.

A house built on love

Ah Ma, who uses a walking stick as her legs are no longer strong, lived in a wooden house built by her late husband just before they were married. Sim described the structure as “a house built on love.”

“If you remember, I visited Ah Ma at her home last December. Her wooden house is almost 70 years old. Now, all of that is just a memory. Her husband has passed away, and the house had become worn and was close to collapsing,” he wrote.

Sim also shared that he had promised her a new home before the Chinese New Year.

“I had planned to celebrate the New Year with Ah Ma, but she had to be admitted to the hospital during the festivities. And when she was discharged, I ended up in the hospital myself.

“I told myself that once I was out, the first thing I had to do was fulfil that promise,” he added.

The new home was completed in less than 2 months

Sim kept his promise, and in less than two months, the new house was completed. He recently visited Ah Ma and her grandchildren in their new home, where they enjoyed a steamboat meal together.

“A new year, a new house, a new spirit. The living room is comfortable with new furniture, and the roof no longer leaks. Ah Ma now has a cosy bedroom and a safe bathroom fitted with facilities for the elderly.

“I may not be able to do more, but I feel truly happy seeing the smile on Ah Ma’s face. May she always be blessed with good health.”

“Grateful to see Ah Ma comfortable now. It’s no easy feat to build a house in less than two months. Wishing YB Sim continued good health after coming out of the hospital as well.”
