KUALA LUMPUR – A meeting between Human Resources Minister Steven Sim and Perlis Mufti Datuk Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin has drawn praise and warmth online, with the mufti describing Sim’s approach to politics as the essence of the “Malaysian” spirit.
In a social media post, Asri — better known as Dr Maza — said Sim visited him at his home in Perlis, calling the non-Muslim minister a courteous leader who understands the country’s multicultural fabric.
“Steven Sim is a non-Muslim political figure who is very polite and understands our country’s background,” he wrote. “His strength lies in his command of the Malay language, his good knowledge, and his refined manners.”
He added that Sim’s politics reflect a broad, inclusive vision of Malaysia.
“His politics appear ‘Malaysian’, not based on narrow communalism. May he continue to choose the path that brings goodness and compassion,” Asri said.
Their meeting was accompanied by Penang’s famous Nasi Kandar Deen Mutiara, brought from the island by the restaurant’s owner A. Wahab, who joined them for lunch.

Photos of the gathering — showing the two men smiling in relaxed conversation — went viral across platforms, with many Malaysians commenting on the warmth between them.
“Dr Maza and YB Steven Sim look like brothers — they even have the same face,” wrote Instagram user @salbiahsham.
Another user, @dredriniskandar, commented light-heartedly: “How come they look alike? May he be granted the blessing of guidance one day. Nothing is impossible.”
User @mysarahza added, “Yes, YB Steven serves Bukit Mertajam excellently. Deen Mutiara is my favourite — totally addictive! Must have it at least once, can’t resist it hehe.”
Meanwhile, @norrryshhh praised Asri’s influence, writing: “Dato’s aura is unique — more influential than most ministers, and even among the 13 muftis.”
For many, the meeting symbolised more than a friendly visit — it was a snapshot of the quiet bridges that still unite Malaysians, one meal and one conversation at a time. — October 11, 2025
