JOHOR BAHRU: A man in his 30s with 27 previous criminal records was arrested after he allegedly stole a lorry and attempted to evade police in the Pasir Gudang area today.

Seri Alam police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the incident occurred at about 7.20 am after the lorry had earlier been reported missing and was suspected to have been stolen in the Plentong area.

He said members of the public contacted the police after the lorry was spotted in the Tanjung Langsat Industrial Area, Pasir Gudang.

“Acting on the information, police managed to locate the lorry, but the suspect driving it refused to stop and attempted to flee.

“The suspect also drove dangerously and rammed a police patrol car before he was arrested in the Pasir Gudang area at 10.20 am,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Sohaimi said that upon inspection, police found a transparent packet containing a substance believed to be drugs.

He said further checks found that the suspect had previous records involving criminal and drug-related offences, adding that the suspect tested positive for methamphetamine.

The case is being investigated under Sections 379A and 186 of the Penal Code, Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987, as well as Sections 12(2) and 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Mohd Sohaimi said police would apply for a remand order against the suspect at the Johor Bahru Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Oct 1).

Earlier, a video showing several police vehicles in pursuit of the green lorry in the Pasir Gudang area went viral on social media.
