Malaysia has enough on its plate. Yet, once again, we find ourselves entangled in a geopolitical mess that does nothing to strengthen our economy, improve our governance, or uplift our people. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reaffirmed that Malaysia’s stance on Gaza will align with other Islamic nations, stating, "Gaza is important. Malaysia's stance would remain consistent with that of other Islamic nations." But why? Must we always shoulder the weight of foreign conflicts that bring zero benefits to our nation?
Let’s be blunt—our involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is symbolic at best and counterproductive at worst. Aligning with other Islamic nations might sound noble, but what does it actually achieve? More political grandstanding? Empty diplomatic posturing? Meanwhile, inflation, youth unemployment, and governance inefficiencies remain unaddressed at home.
Trump’s Bombshell: Another Western Disruption?
The U.S. President Donald Trump, never one to shy away from controversy, has proposed that the U.S. take over Gaza, resettle Palestinians elsewhere, and develop the territory economically. This reeks of Western interventionism—a playbook that has left the Middle East in shambles for decades. When asked about this, Anwar responded, "We are reviewing the statement first, then we will comment on it."
So why should Malaysia jump into yet another American-induced chaos?
Instead of fixating on Trump’s unpredictable foreign policy maneuvers, our government should be focused on matters that directly impact Malaysians. How many times have we seen American policies shift overnight with new leadership? Why waste time reacting to empty rhetoric when we have real problems to solve at home?
The Endless Burden of Global Advocacy
Malaysia is a sovereign nation, not a moral compass for global issues. Yes, humanitarian concerns matter, but should they supersede national interests? Our leaders need to ask: Does taking a stance on Gaza boost our economy? Does it lower living costs? Does it create jobs?
The answer is a hard no.
We must learn from other nations that prioritize self-preservation. The U.S. selectively intervenes based on national interest. China advances its economic agenda without wasting resources on symbolic activism. Even powerful Muslim-majority nations put economic and military strength ahead of ideological unity. Why, then, should Malaysia keep carrying unnecessary burdens?
Malaysia First: A Smarter Diplomatic Approach
If Malaysia truly wants to be a global player, it needs to act like one. That means prioritizing national interests over foreign entanglements. Our government should focus on strengthening the economy, advancing technology, and ensuring domestic stability rather than engaging in fruitless international conflicts.
Diplomacy should be strategic, not sentimental. Aligning with Islamic nations merely for the sake of unity is short-sighted if it doesn’t bring concrete benefits to Malaysia. We need partnerships that add real value, not alliances based on ideological or religious camaraderie alone.
Enough distractions. Our nation has more pressing issues to handle—let’s clean up our own house before concerning ourselves with others’ messes.
