Those hungry for power should wait for the next general elections set for 2027 if Malaysians want a new government to be elected, Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) president Dr Muhammad Mohan said.
He cited the "Sheraton Move", and that state elections have no legal bearing on the Federal Government. “Any parties considering installing a backdoor government should stop such futile and unnecessary exercise. Instead, focus on working together to rebuild the nation.”
TI-M condemned calls made by some political leaders for the PMX Anwar Ibrahim to step down. “It is sending the wrong message to the public and international community. “TI-M thinks this is a wrong message to the public and the international community. Malaysia needs political stability to attract foreign investments and for the government to see through the success of its economic revival plans.”
Dr Muhammad applauded Anwar’s effort to reconcile with the opposition, asking all political parties to close ranks, build closer ties, and work together to make the country great again.
“The Government should not be distracted but continue to focus on reviving the economy and accelerate the institutional reforms.”
At the same time, TI-M called for the separation of powers between the Attorney General's Chambers and the Public Prosecutor's Office to maintain stability.
Dr Muhammad called on the Government for urgent implementation of reforms to amend the Whistleblower Protection Act to encourage individuals to report illicit activities, pass the Parliamentary Services Act, and continue to enhance the independence of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in fighting corruption.
He added that the government should also pass a Political Financing Act to ensure transparency over funds and prevent misappropriation of funds, bribery, fraud and abuse of power by political parties or politicians.
It further said that the government's plans on the Madani Economic Framework, National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP) require transparency, good governance and competent leadership for it to be successfully executed.
