“Don’t ever say that this group or that race is Pendatang (immigrant) anymore for the unity of this country. Don’t ever say go back to your country of origin. Don’t ever provoke one race against another race,” Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan said in a fiery speech in Parliament on 26 October 2023.
His speech was reported in the Malay news portals and had little coverage in the English media.
In his three-minute speech, Sany added: “Don’t disturb the peace and harmony between races. Don’t split the Malays and the Chinese. Don’t frighten the Chinese and the Malays and try to separate them. Don’t frighten the other races of Malaysia who are living peacefully.
“This is our country, born here, brought up here, and we love this country. Don’t tell us to leave. This is our country, Tuan Speaker, and we are the heritage of this country. And, we want to pass the nation we love in peace and harmony to the next generation. If this nation is destroyed, where do we go? Ladies and gentlemen,” he questioned the MPs in Parliament.
Sany is a Malaysian politician and teacher who has served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Hulu Langat since November 2022. He served as a Member of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly for Taman Templer from May 2018 to August 2023.
He further suggested that all premises under ministries and government agencies display the principles of the Rukun Negara. “Rukun Negara, which is a guide to the harmony and unity of the various races in this country, is now seen as if it has been neglected. Now it seems that we ignore it, if you want to see Rukun Negara you have to go to school, (look) near the school wall but sometimes the paint on the wall has faded.
"Secondly, we must have it on the covers of school students' exercise books. To me it is very important, Rukun Negara needs to be understood, executed and debated. The Rukun Negara should be used as a guide to the life of a pluralistic society to guarantee the unity and harmony of society in Malaysia.”
