
A POWERFUL storm accompanied by intense rainfall and strong winds swept through several areas in the Sungai Manik subdistrict of Hilir Perak late on Saturday, leaving significant damage and widespread fallen trees.
A spokesperson for the District Operations Control Centre of the Malaysian Civil Defence Force said the agency received reports of more than 70 trees being uprooted or snapped during the incident.
According to the spokesperson, emergency calls began coming in at around 6pm, shortly after the severe weather developed.
“The cause of the incident was heavy rain accompanied by strong winds in the Hilir Perak district beginning at 5.56pm,” the spokesperson said.
Among the affected locations were Parit 7A and B, Parit 9A and B, Parit 12B, Parit 1A, Parit 10A, Parit 5B, Parit 8A, as well as Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sultan Abdullah in Chenderong Balai.
As of midnight, a total of 34 houses were reported affected, comprising 14 in Kampung Permatang, three in Kampung Sungai Tungku, seven in Kampung Sungai Keroh and 10 in Kampung Sungai Batu.
Authorities confirmed that no temporary evacuation centres had been opened as of midnight.
Clean-up operations to clear fallen trees and debris are ongoing, with multiple agencies assisting in the response. - April 26, 2026
