Downpours which battered the UK on Friday will be replaced with below-freezing temperatures and potentially snow in the coming days.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued the cold weather warning for parts of the Midlands and northern England from Monday as temperatures are set to drop by 8 degrees.
Colder conditions could bring snow showers to northern parts of the UK and hilltops with the first frosts of the season forecast for the south on Wednesday, according to the Met Office.
It comes as a major incident has been declared in south Wales after the area was battered with wind and heavy rain during the onslaught from Storm Claudia.
The warning, declared in the early hours of Saturday morning, means there is a "significant risk to life", with emergency services working round-the clock to carry out rescues and evacuations.
As of 10am on Saturday the Environment Agency has issued 78 flood warnings and 179 flood warnings in England as some areas face fast-flowing and deep floodwater posing a “danger to life”.

Rail: Storm Claudia damage disrupting tens of thousands of journeys
11:00 , Rebecca WhittakerThe Independent’s travel correspondent Simon Calder reports:
Tens of thousands of rail passengers are facing difficult journeys on Saturday as a result of damage caused by Storm Claudia.
Flooding in the Swindon area and between Chippenham and Bath Spa closed the main Great Western Railway links to Bristol and South Wales.
“The flood water is now receding allowing the lines to be reopened,” says National Rail.
Passengers are warned: “Trains between these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised as services return to normal.”
Many GWR trains have been cancelled or are running with long delays.
On the Wales-England border, no trains can run between Shrewsbury and Cardiff “until the water levels recede”.
The CrossCountry line between Gloucester and Severn Tunnel Junction has now reopened after flooding, but delays and cancellations will continue as disruption clears.
In North Wales, Blaenau Ffestiniog station is closed.
In northwest England, the line between Macclesfield and Stockport is closed due to damage to the overhead wires.
“Train services running through these stations may be diverted via Crewe,” says National Rail.
The route is the main link between London Euston and Manchester.

Public urged to avoid Monmouth as flooding continues

Area Manager Matt Jones said conditions remained challenging due to fast-moving water, blocked roads and pressure on infrastructure.
He said: “This is a large-scale incident, and our crews and partners have been working tirelessly through the night and into today to help those affected.
“I want to thank everyone involved for the professionalism and care they continue to show in very difficult circumstances.

AA warns of ‘surface water flooding and hazardous driving conditions’
Friday 14 November 2025 21:11 , Athena StavrouThe AA is warning motorists about the effects of Storm Claudia on the East of England, the Midlands and south east Wales.
The Met Office has issued an amber weather warning for rain across a swathe of southern Britain.
The motoring organisation said: “Storm Claudia will bring rain that will become persistent and heavy during Friday. 40-60mm of rain is widely expected, with some places seeing around 80mm.
“These higher accumulations more probable across the East Midlands, and higher ground in Wales and western England. Impacts may be exacerbated by strong easterly winds, as well as thunderstorms later Friday afternoon and evening.
“The amber alert signals a higher likelihood of severe impacts, including flooding and travel disruption.”In addition to the amber alert, a yellow warning for rain covers a wider area up to 6am on Saturday.
“This means persistent heavy rain will continue before and after the amber period, increasing the risk of surface water flooding and hazardous driving conditions,” the AA said.

At least 17 properties flooded
Friday 14 November 2025 17:59 , Athena StavrouAt least 17 properties have been flooded due to Storm Claudia, with more expected to be affected.
The Environment Agency said on Friday that the rainfall has already caused flooding in the north of England and that significant surface water and river flooding is expected across larger parts of England, particularly central areas.
Joe Cuthbertson, Flood Duty Manager at the Environment Agency, said:
"Significant surface water and river flooding impacts are probable for parts of England on Friday, with significant river flooding likely continuing into Saturday. Ongoing impacts from rivers are possible across the weekend.
"Environment Agency teams are out on the ground, operating flood defences and supporting local authorities in responding to surface water flooding. We urge people not to drive though flood water – it is often deeper than it looks and just 30cm of flowing water is enough to float your car.”

Flooding is expected in areas hit by amber weather warning
Friday 14 November 2025 13:30 , Rebecca WhittakerStorm Claudia is expected to cause flooding in areas with amber weather warnings.
The Met Office has warned the heavy rain could cause homes and businesses to flood, which could lead to road closures and transport delays.
Fast-flowing or deep floodwater is also possible in an amber weather warning, which could pose a danger to life.
“We’re urging people to be vigilant and to make preparations for potential flooding now. You can check if you live in an area at risk of flooding on our website and sign up for our free flood warning service,” Alun Attwood, duty tactical manager Wales at Natural Resources Wales said.
“We do not provide flood warnings for flooding from surface water, so it’s important for everyone to know their flood risk.
“If flooding is forecast in your area, we want to make sure people are doing all they can to keep themselves safe. Think about preparing a flood kit with any important documents and medication, moving your car to higher ground and moving treasured possessions upstairs or to a higher place.
“We also want to remind people to keep away from swollen riverbanks and not to drive or walk through flood waters as you don’t know what lies beneath.”
