The storm that hit the area two days ago flattened the huts of slum dwellers living in the Muradpur settlement. As a result, around 100 families have become homeless and are now forced to live in the open.
Raj Kumar, the village sarpanch, said that the makeshift facilities arranged by these poor families, including huts built for bathing and other daily needs, have also collapsed.
Expressing their distress, residents including Shambhu, Bhola, Raju, Babita and others said that the heavy rains following the storm made their lives miserable, forcing them to remain exposed to the rain throughout the night. They said that during election periods, many people come to them and express sympathy, but in this hour of crisis, no one has come forward to help them.
The residents said that they have no firewood left for cooking, their food supplies and ration have been ruined, and they do not even have flour or other basic necessities remaining.
They further stated that all their belongings have been destroyed, and they now have to rebuild their lives from scratch. According to them, everything in their homes — from flour and other food items to clothes and bedding — has been damaged or destroyed.
The families are currently living amid stagnant, foul-smelling water and have appealed for immediate assistance so they can begin rebuilding their lives.
