Streeting says he is still in ‘first impressions territory’ with Trump

  • New Defence Secretary Wes Streeting has refused to say whether he trusts Donald Trump, saying that he is in "first impressions territory" – but says that he trusts the United States.
  • In an interview with Sky News’ Sir Trevor Phillips, Mr Streeting suggested that Europe would ultimately be grateful to Mr Trump for prompting them to take greater responsibility for their own defence, reducing reliance on the US.
  • He underscored the unique and integral nature of the alliance between the US and the UK for defence and security.
  • Mr Streeting also said that the UK would not support offensive action in Iran but would collaborate with the US on preventing the development of nuclear weapons.
  • It was Sir Trevor’s last appearance on his politics show, Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips, after three years as he has accepted a position with CBS News.
