Learning a lesson from the experience of Operation Sindoor, the Municipal Corporation (MC) has decided to link the street-lighting system with the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) situated in Sector 17 here.

In the General House meeting held recently, Sanjay Arora, MC Chief Engineer, told the House that under the proposed system, all streetlights would be controlled from the centre. The city has over 55, 000 streetlights. These can be switched off or on from the control centre.

The MC officers accepted the fact that during the blackout at the time of Operation Sindoor, they had failed to switch off the streetlights in various parks and other public places in time.

A “Request for Proposal” will be floated for the new project and work to integrate the streetlights with the ICCC will start after the selection of a company. Councillors will be able to monitor the lights in their respective wards in real time on their mobiles.

The corporation is also planning to hire a new agency on a public private partnership model, which will maintain the streetlights for the next 10 years. This agency will also introduce a “dimming” feature, meaning light can be adjusted as needed.

With the implementation of the new system, the Municipal Corporation will be able to save crores of rupees annually.
