The political landscape of Sabah, a Malaysian state rich in ethnicity and cultural diversity, is once again a topic of intense discussion as state elections approach. The last Sabah elections took place in September 2020. The state assembly will be automatically dissolved by October next year, after which the next elections must be held within 60 days.
In this volatile environment, the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition, composed of Sabah-based parties, stands at a crossroads. A strategic alliance with Pakatan Harapan (PH), the ruling coalition at the federal level, presents a promising path forward. This arrangement not only addresses local concerns more effectively but also distances Sabah from the historically tumultuous and toxic politics of UMNO and Perikatan Nasional (PN), dominated by BERSATU and PAS.
A collaboration between GRS and PH would prioritize the unique needs and aspirations of Sabah's local communities. The Sabah-based parties within GRS, such as Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR), are deeply rooted in the local context and better positioned to understand and address regional and local issues. By partnering with PH, GRS can leverage the federal coalition's resources and political stability, ensuring that Sabah's development is aligned with broader national goals while still retaining a focus on local priorities.
This moves away from UMNO and PN is particularly crucial for maintaining political stability and investor confidence.
UMNO President Dato' Seri Zahid Hamidi’s recent announcement about a potential BN-PH tie-up in Sabah, ostensibly aimed at securing early political advantages, has instead introduced uncertainty and anxiety. Such preemptive declarations, rather than fostering stability, can lead to political turbulence, deterring investors and creating apprehension among the local population. Zahid's approach underscores the need for more discreet and calculated political maneuvering. For the good of Sabah, these discussions should be conducted behind the scenes to avoid unnecessary disruption.
Moreover, the hatred and messy political climate associated with UMNO and PN's historical maneuvers have often hindered effective governance. The internal strife and shifting alliances, particularly the attempted ousting of the state government in January 2023 by Sabah BN, Warisan, and others, exemplify the destabilizing effect of their politics. Sabah cannot afford such instability, especially when its economic growth and social development are at stake.
On the contrary, PH Sabah has demonstrated a commitment to supporting Sabah's leadership under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, ensuring the government completes its full term. This stability is crucial for implementing long-term development projects and attracting sustainable investments. PH's approach aligns with the broader goals of the Madani government, emphasizing inclusive development and respect for state autonomy, as seen in their support for the amendments to the Rural Administration Ordinance which grants more control to the state over its village committees.
In another note on GRS-BERSATU alliance, analysts suggest that GRS, by maintaining its independence from peninsula-based parties like BERSATU, can better serve the interests of Sabahans. Azmi Hassan, a fellow at the National Council of Professors, pointed out that Sabahan voters might resist a GRS-BERSATU alliance due to the latter's lack of local roots and previous political betrayals. The preference is clear: a coalition that embodies local interests, free from the baggage of past conflicts and mainland political dynamics.
A partnership between GRS and PH represents a strategic alignment that can propel Sabah towards a stable and prosperous future. This alliance would empower local leaders to address community-specific issues effectively while benefiting from the broader support and stability offered by the federal government. By steering clear of the disruptive politics of UMNO and PN, Sabah can create a conducive environment for growth, ensuring the well-being of its people and the continued attraction of investment.
