Strong earthquake strikes off Siargao Island, Philippines

A POWERFUL earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck in the Philippine Sea, approximately 14 kilometres southeast of Siargao Island, at 7.03 am local time on Friday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) confirmed.

The quake, which occurred at a depth of 69 kilometres, was considered shallow, causing it to be felt more strongly near the epicentre compared to deeper seismic events.

Residents across parts of Mindanao and the Visayas reported significant tremors lasting several seconds.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, but authorities said assessments were ongoing in areas near the epicentre. Emergency response teams have been placed on alert.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) and regional seismological agencies recorded the tremor and are continuing to monitor for possible aftershocks.

No tsunami warning was issued following the quake.

Seismologists noted that the Philippines lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a zone of high seismic activity where numerous tectonic plates meet, making the country particularly prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. - October 17, 2025
