
Kuala Lumpur: A strong earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.0 on the Richter scale, occurred at 1.19 pm today off the northwest coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department.
It said in a statement that the earthquake with a depth of 19 kilometres (km) occurred at a distance of 323 km west of Simeulue, Indonesia.
However, it did not pose a tsunami threat to Malaysia, it said.
