ALLIANCE for a Safe Community Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has called for urgent action to strengthen child protection laws, implement stricter digital safeguards, and foster greater coordination across agencies to protect children’s rights and wellbeing.
In a statement released today, Lee emphasised that every child has the fundamental right to safety, education, healthcare, and a life free from harm and exploitation.
However, he highlighted the growing threats that continue to undermine these rights, including abuse, online exploitation, trafficking, and the lack of access to quality education and mental health services.
"Child abuse and neglect, both physical and emotional, continue to rise, with many cases going unreported due to fear, lack of awareness, or inadequate child protection mechanisms," Lee said.
He also pointed to the rapid growth of digital platforms as a major concern, making children more vulnerable to online grooming, cyberbullying, and child pornography.
“The increasing use of digital technologies has put children at greater risk, and we must address the dangers associated with these platforms,” he added.
Lee’s statement also highlighted the persistent issue of child trafficking and forced labour, which remain widespread due to weak enforcement and a lack of coordination between relevant authorities.
He urged the government to prioritise stronger laws and improve enforcement mechanisms to combat these crimes.
"Stricter laws and better enforcement are needed to combat child abuse, exploitation, and trafficking.
‘Authorities must ensure swift action against offenders," Lee stressed.
He also called on parents and educators to work together to enhance children's online safety by promoting digital literacy programmes and more robust monitoring of online content.
In addition, Lee urged the establishment of an independent Children’s Commission that would oversee child protection policies, investigate rights violations, and make recommendations for improvements.
“Establishing a Children’s Commission would signal the government’s strong commitment to child welfare and ensure continuous, focused advocacy for children’s rights,” he said.
“Children are the future of our nation, and failing to protect them means jeopardising our society’s long-term wellbeing. It is our collective duty to ensure that every child grows up in a safe, nurturing, and empowering environment,” Lee said. - April 6, 2025
