Student critically injured in suspected fall from school building in Sungai Petani

A 17-YEAR-OLD male student sustained serious injuries after allegedly falling from the fourth floor of a school in Kuala Muda district earlier today, police confirmed.

The teenager, who is registered as a person with disabilities, reportedly fell at around 12.15pm.

The incident came to light when the police post at Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital received a notification from the hospital’s emergency department regarding the critical condition of the student.

Kuala Muda District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan, said preliminary inquiries indicate the student fell from the school’s fourth-floor administrative block.

“The upper levels of the building are classrooms. The school informed us that at the time of the incident, a morning assembly was taking place in the main hall, which the student involved did not attend,” he said.

Hanyan confirmed that the boy, who is autistic, suffered a fractured left arm. Investigators have reviewed two school CCTV recordings that partially capture the incident, which, while incomplete, are assisting the ongoing investigation.

“We will be returning to the school to obtain statements from eyewitnesses,” Hanyan added.

Authorities are treating the case with urgency, seeking to determine the circumstances that led to the fall and whether additional safety measures are required to prevent similar accidents in the future. - March 2, 2026
