An environmental newbie calling themselves The Green Machine, has teamed up with biotechnology giants, AIMST University to help reduce landfills in Kedah and make Sungai Petani town more liveable, true to it's tagline 'Sungai Petani Bandar Daya Huni'. According to a the Kuala Muda district blueprint, the population growth of the town is expected to reach a staggering 1 million by 2035 and if nothing is done to manage food waste systematically, the landfills in Kedah will not be able to cope with the potentially mammoth waste to by produced by Sungai Petani residents. Hence, The Green Machine has embarked with a solution to solve this pertinent issue via the Eco Food Waste Management System that won them Top 30 spot in an environmental competition organised by UMW Toyota recently. Currently the environmental wannabes is working on the project actively in their target area, the Taman Ria market where food waste and fruit peels are disposed indiscriminately at the two rubbish bins located at the market. They strongly believe if left unattended, this location is prone to pollution, infestation of rodents, methane gas emissions which will be detrimental to the health of people in the area. Furthermore the heaps of food waste which spills over the rubbish bins is strewn over to the road and is definitely not a sight to behold.

Thanks to the collaboration with AIMST University, the Dean of Applied Science, Prof Dr Lee, Dr Sumitha and Dr Mugilan, they will be lending their expertise and facility on the proper way to compost the food waste to create quality and effective fertilizer. The area of focus is the nitrogen carbon composition of the waste and amount of waste to be compost and other areas in composting which is quite alien to these student . The collaboration between the minnows and giants in tackling environmental issues will definitely spur the younger generation to be aware of environment impacts such as global warming, climate change, pollution and many other disasters which is detrimental to mankind. The assistance of AIMST University will further offer them a sound education and new learning curve in biotechnology so as to offer fresh and news solutions to countermeasure issues that is plaguing the universe.
