
A university student claims her parents demanded she share her RM5,000 scholarship with siblings, sparking debate online about financial pressure on students.
A heartbreaking social media post of a university student recently made rounds online after sharing how her parents have allegedly made her give a portion of her scholarship money to them.
Posted on Threads, the student claimed that she receives RM5,000 from her scholarship grant per semester however, her parents demand that she divide the money to share with her other siblings.
“When I give less, they call me stingy and get angry at me. But when I give more, I’m the one who ends up struggling and having to work part-time,” she lamented in her post.

She further claimed that one of her parents frequenrly reminded her that the money does not belong to her but to them instead, explaining that when she first received the scholarship, she used part of the scholarship fund to repay her debts incrr
Faced with this situation, the young student is now stuck between a rock and a hard place if she stood her ground against her family’s demands or choose to pay the amount and end up with little to no money at the end of the semester.
She also shared that certain expenses such as transportation and food were covered by her boyfriend.
To make matters worse, the student claimed to being a lot more pressured to land a scholarship compared to her siblings despite managing to land the scholarship through her own efforts.
Furthermore, she revealed that her parents have recently asked her to financially support her younger sister eventhough the sister’s education is funded through the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).
Netizens sympathised with the young student’s situation, reminding that her parents, at the end of the day, have an obligation to care for her siblings and asserting that the scholarship money belongs to her.
“I blame your parents. You don’t deserve to even feel obliged to share your money with your siblings,” a user commented.
In the future, with the cost of living continuing to rise (due to the ongoing war), it will be even harder to survive or find part-time work. It’s better to be labeled stingy if it means you can continue studying until you graduate and not drop out because you’re struggling to survive,” said another.
