
College students are turning to artificial intelligence in search of mental health support, according to a new study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders.
The research, conducted by a team at Mass General Brigham, reveals a striking trend. Nearly one in five surveyed students reported using AI tools for mental health advice or assistance.
Those experiencing severe mental health symptoms were even more likely to seek help from these digital platforms. This phenomenon raises compelling questions about how technology is reshaping support systems for young adults in higher education.
The findings are timely and significant. The Healthy Minds Study, an annual web-based survey covering student mental health across U.S. institutions, provided the basis for the investigation. Researchers looked at data collected from 675 students at two colleges during the 2024–2025 academic year. They observed that 18% of respondents had sought mental health support from AI platforms.
However, students reporting moderate or severe depression, marked anxiety, or even suicidal thoughts, were almost twice as likely to use AI for mental health compared to their peers. Among Asian students, usage rates were similarly elevated, suggesting sociocultural dynamics may influence engagement with digital tools.
This surge in AI use is both intriguing and concerning. Experts involved in the study point out that students grappling with significant distress may be especially drawn to AI, perhaps because of perceived barriers to traditional care or because these platforms offer unique forms of support.
AI tools are accessible around the clock. Users are never rejected; validation is unconditional. For some, these qualities are appealing—but not without risks. The researchers caution that while many students find AI helpful, these platforms remain largely unregulated. There’s uncertainty about whether reliance on AI bolsters genuine emotional regulation and perspective-taking or whether it undermines critical coping skills.

Researchers recommend embedding crisis detection and referral mechanisms within AI platforms. Furthermore, colleges must be prepared to assist those who turn to AI as a substitute for formal care—especially among groups who may feel marginalised or perceive barriers to accessing traditional services.
Mental health professionals are urged to keep pace with these changes. Understanding how patients use AI alongside—or instead of—conventional therapy is crucial. While some digital tools are designed specifically for therapeutic purposes, most general-purpose AI platforms lack professional oversight or safeguards. This absence may expose vulnerable students to advice that is unvetted or potentially harmful.
The study highlights a gap in knowledge. Researchers do not yet know whether conversations with AI ultimately benefit users or contribute to emotional dysregulation.
