Going to the toilet is something that we do in auto-pilot mode. Recently, we found out that one should not use hand dryers in public places as they are very dirty.

Now, another scientific study has revealed that flushing the toilet bowl without closing the lid is quite disgusting.

Some engineers from the University of Colorado Boulder recently conducted a study on the flushing of North American public toilet bowls.

Now, they knew that whenever an individual flushes the toilet, particles will come up, however, they did not know how to visualise it.

To tackle this case, they managed to find a solution by using lasers and cameras to capture the movement of droplets when flushing.

Through this study, the researchers managed to find that the bigger particles fall quickly while smaller aerosolised particles remain suspended.

“The toilet flush produces a strong chaotic jet with velocities exceeding 2 m/s; this jet transports aerosols to heights reaching 1.5 m within 8 seconds of initiating a flush.”

The lead author of the study, John Crimaldi, added, “If it’s something you can’t see, it’s easy to pretend it doesn’t exist. But once you see these videos, you’re never going to think about a toilet flush the same way again.”

If you would like your life to be changed, you can watch the video here and if you would like to read the study in detail, you can click here, it’s open access!

Frankly, after watching and reading the study, we’re never leaving the toilet lid up again when flushing!
